Angels

What the?!! Who’s in here?! Who’s shaking me awake? It was near midnight and I had been in bed for about an hour. In recent months I had given my life to Jesus Christ and had prayed wanting to serve Him anyway He wanted me to. Now there was someone, or something trying to wake me up.

Sitting up in bed I could see there wasn’t anybody in there. Getting up I checked on Ma, but she was sound asleep. Next step was to search the house to see if someone had come in. Nothing. Totally confused on what was going on, I sat down at the kitchen table and tried to sort out just what in the world was happening. Was it wind coming through the window? No, no wind to talk about. Well, perhaps a dream. Nope. I never had a dream that seemed so real. Finally decided to chalk it up and go back to bed. But when I got back to my room I could hear a voice saying “get dressed.” Okay, now this is getting beyond weird! Who’s talking to me?!! Jumping back in the bed, I pulled the covers over my head and made an attempt to fall back asleep. But I kept hearing the voice. “Get dressed.” “Get dressed.”

Still not knowing what was going on, I got up and put my clothes on. “Hurry and get outside!” By now I was no longer trying to figure what was happening, just following the directions as they came to me. When I got outside it was eerily quiet and the street lights gave off a mystical aura and I wasn’t sure what I should do next. The voice has now stopped, but something new was occurring. It was as if a magnetic pull of some type was dragging me down the road. As long as I went in the direction this invisible force was pulling me; I seemed to move quickly and smoothly along. It was even like I knew which way to turn, even though I didn’t have the slightest where I was going.

This went on all the way across town until I found myself standing in front of the home of a friend of mine. There were no lights on, but I knew this is where I was supposed to be. Knocking on the door and not knowing what I was going to say to this person at 2AM, I waited.

It wasn’t long before Edward came to the door, fully dressed, and a look in his eyes probably close to what I had earlier when awakened. “John, what are you doing here?” “Edward, I don’t know. But something made me come over here, and I’ve got a feeling it was God. Something going on, Brother?” After staring at me for several minutes he invited me in and we spent the three hours talking. I don’t believe it would be proper for me to say what was going with Edward that night, but finally realized it truly was God, perhaps through an angel, waking me to get over there. Edward was preparing to make the biggest mistake of his life. He was moments from making a decision when I knocked on the door. And yes, I scared the tar out of him when I knocked. But we talked about all that was going on with him, and all that had happened that night. Wow! After several hours of talking and praying we embraced and I headed home.

The sun was coming up now and I walked at a slower pace than earlier, pondering all that had happened that night. Why God? Why me? So many others were more capable of handling a situation like this. The only thing I could come up with was because I was willing to be used by Him anyway He wanted. I came to believe it was an angel that was sent to wake me and be used in the service of our Lord.

Billy Graham spoke of angels when he said “They are unseen protectors: their work is largely invisible. They are constantly at work to safeguard believers, even when we are entirely unaware of their presence. They guard us in all circumstances: He heavily referenced Psalm 91:11-12, where God commands His angels to protect believers wherever they go. While this does not mean Christians will never face hardships, it means they are never outside of God’s loving care and protection.”

Edward sought counseling and I’m happy to report he’s doing great all these years later. I seldom see him these days, but when I do we both remember that night God got both our attentions.

I’ve only had that scenario play out a couple of other times in my life. But now I realize that God is working through His angels to work through me.

Psalm 91:11 “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

I realize there are ones among you, good people that don’t believe in angels. That’s okay, I understand. But that doesn’t mean they’re not real. God loves us so much He uses angels to help us. Of course there’s someone out there saying, “John, I can’t believe in something I’ve never seen. Oh really.

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

See ya next time!
